The fellows visit the Healesville Nature Center: The fellows
braved the cold and rain (It was the coldest day in the month of may in Melbourne in 25 years) in order to visit the animals at the Healesville
Nature Center. The nature center is located approximately one hour outside
of Melbourne and the animals in the nature center are present in their natural environment. The fellows traveled by bus (piloted by Richard de
Steiger and were joined by his wife, Mandy, and by the Australian Orthopaedic Association President, John Hart. The fellows had a tour of
the nature center, but John also was an unlimited source of information regarding the animals and their habitat. One of the highlights of the trip
was a visit to the animal hospital where injured wild animals are treated.
A fracture conference spontaneously developed and the fellows had the opportunity to review and comment on a number of interesting orthopaedic
cases.
The fellows then had an outstanding lunch at the Royal Automobile
Club and traveled to a local winery for a wine tasting. Upon return to Melbourne, the fellows visited John Hart in his lovely home. John provided
a tour of his home which contains a large amount of art and artifacts from
Australia and Southeast Asia. The fellows then had a quiet dinner on their
final evening in Australia.
