Day 34

The fellows in van driven by Michael Sandow, heading to Adelaide Airport with considerable baggage. Dinner at the Melbourne club.

X-ray conference at the Western Hospital, Melbourne.

Lunch with Richard De Steiger.

The fellows visit Melbourne: The fellows visited the Western Hospital in the morning and had an x-ray conference with the staff and registrars. A wide range of trauma, reconstructive, and tumor cases were shown and an excellent discussion followed each of the cases. The fellows then had a brunch with Richard De Steiger at a restaurant on the lake and had a few hours free prior to the afternoon academic session which was held at the Royal Austalasian College of Surgeons. All of the fellows presented at the conference as well as a number of the staff and the event was stimulating for all involved. The fellows then left directly for the footy (Australian Rules Football) which varies considerably from gridiron. The fellows quickly became fans of the event and were ardent supporters of the Saints (they appeared to be sitting in more of a Saints cheering section!) who soundly thrashed the Bombers. Dinner was eaten in club in the MCG which is a magnificient stadium that seats 100,000 fans and which was constructed for the 1956 Olympic games. The fellows all left with their new footy balls determined to bring the game back to North America!

Kurt, Emil, and Cato during the academic meeting at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Paul, Guy, and Larry at meeting.

The footy at the Melbourne Cricket Club.

A local passerby getting into the act with the fellows - photo opportunity!
