The fellows visit Charing Cross Hospital:
The fellows set out for Charing Cross Hospital and had their first
experience with the London tube. The fellows were temporarily trapped in
the tube station due to the purchase of the incorrect tickets but upon
arrival, had a superb academic day. The morning sessions were moderated
by Professor Hughes and included presentations on trauma and spine. Emil
presented his research findings on the use of different plates and their
effects on bone blood supply, mechanical strength, and fracture healing.
The afternoon sessions were moderated by Mr. Robin Strachan and included
presentations on arthritis and tissue engineering. Cato presented data
on from his laboratory regarding the engineering of bone substitutes and
generated considerable discussion. The fellows returned briefly to the
Nuffield prior to going to dinner. Professor Hughes had kindly made
arrangements for the laundry to be done, a need which had not yet been
attended to. The fellows had a laundry sorting melee in Guy's room and
it was quickly apparent that the fellows had little experience in this
regard. Approximately 10 articles of clothing are left unclaimed. Some
of the fellows, like Larry (a few less socks), feel short-changed, while
others, like Regis, have extra clothes that they cannot get rid off.
After some discussion, Guy obtained a nice cotton shirt that no one
could honestly claim. Larry is hoping to obtain some extra socks on the
next round of laundry.
An excellent dinner was shared in the evening with Professor Hughes,
Mr. Strachan, and other guests at the Athenium Club. Guy gave a toast on
behalf of the fellows and gifts were exchanged. The fellows returned to
the Nuffield to prepare for an early morning departure for Manchester.
