The fellows visit Manchester and Wrightington. The fellows left
London on a 6:55 a.m. train and traveled to Manchester where they were met
by Professor
Galasko, their host at Manchester and by Peter Kay and Martyn Porter from the Wrightington Hospital. After a quick stop at the hotel, the
fellows traveled approximately 45 minutes to Wrightington where they had a
fabulous visit. All of the fellows attended the operating theater where they
observed cases. Regis and Larry viewed a revision hip arthroplasty in the
operating room previously used by Sir John Charnley. The fellows then toured
the Charnley museum which documents the singular contributions of both Charnley and the Wrightington to joint replacement surgery. Afternoon
sessions focused on upper and lower extremity reconstruction and the fellows
had the opportunity to discuss upper extremity surgery with Professor Stanley. Cato presented a paper on shoulder instability while Paul presented
his work on the management and diagnosis of joint infection.
The fellows then went to a local health club. Cato rowed and practiced imaginary golf swings (trying to get rid of the slice!), Emil road
the bike, Kurt ran, and the rest of the fellows did other healthy things. Dinner was shared with members of the department at The Highmoor Inn, a
delightful restaurant in a country setting. Regis gave a toast on behalf of the fellows. The fellows returned home at midnight to prepare for the
following day in Manchester.
