The fellows in Birmingham and surrounding areas: The fellows
visited the Birmingham Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and joined their hosts in
the clinics or in the O.R. and obtained a real flavor of orthopaedic care in
the area. After lunch the fellows went site-seeing with Marcus, a senior
registrar who was an excellent guide and host. The fellows explored Warwick
castle and viewed the dungeons and torture devices as well as the spectacular
living quarters. A great deal was learned about life in the castle
during the
different ages.
The fellows left in the late afternoon for Stratford-on-Avon where they attended the museum at the birthplace of William Shakespeare.
After dinner in a local pub, the fellows were rejoined by their hosts and
attended a performance of Tales of Ovid by the Royal Shakespeare Company at
the Swan theater. Seating at the Swan theater is in the round, Similar to
the late 16th and early 17th century theaters familiar to Shakespeare. The
performance was energetic and exciting and was enjoyed by all. The group
then went to a local pub which has been frequented through the years by many
outstanding contributors to the theater where several members of the cast
were also present. The day was an outstanding exposure to the history and
culture of the area.
