The fellows left for Nottingham on a 9 a.m. bus for Birmingham. Larry, Kurt, and Regis went for a run along the canal path while the other fellows had a leisurely morning. The fellows were met at the Birmingham Royal Orthopaedic Hospital by Mr. Rob Grimer (ABC 1990). The fellows then went over to the Oncology offices and were shown recent tumor cases by Mr. Grimer and Mr. Simon Carter (ABC 1994). The remarkable variety of complex cases was of particular interest to Regis, but all of the fellows participated in the discussions. A large number of faculty joined the fellows for lunch and attended and participated in the academic session in the afternoon. The fellows learned about several of the outstanding clinical and basic research programs being conducted in Birmingham. A presentation by Andrew Thomas on the structure and management of the NHS was of great interest and generated considerable discussion. Kurt presented extensive work which he has conducted on pain management following knee surgery and the use of femoral nerve block. Guy gave an excellent overview of the development of clinical trials, using examples from his research. The fellows all stayed with members of the faculty: Regis with Rob Grimer; Paul with Ronan Treacy; Kurt with Ducan Learmonth; Larry with Alistair Thompson; Cato with Andrew Thomas; Emil with Jeremy Plewes; and Guy with John O'Hara. Four of the fellows situated in the county met at the home of Alistair Thompson for dinner. Alistair lives in a unique home. A three hundred year old barn, built tongue and groove without the use of nails, was spectacularly converted into a home. The house has open spaces and exposure of the original beams. A wonderful meal was enjoyed here by Regis, Larry, Cato, and Paul. Kurt, Guy, and Emil joined their hosts for an excellent meal in a traditional English pub.
