The fellows left Edinburgh on the evening of the 15th day. However, the plane flight was canceled due to heavy fog which enveloped the Edinburgh area. The fellows were transported to Glasgow by bus and finally arrived in Notttingham around 11 p.m. The fellows were met at the airport by Professor Angus Wallace (ABC 1986) and were transported to the Walton Hotel. The fellows discussed the upcoming day with Professor Wallace over a few pints, specially arranged by the hotel clerk. The next day was both informative and exciting. The fellows attended ward rounds with the consultants and registrars and reviewed the trauma cases from the previous weekend. This was followed by didactic sessions in the late morning and afternoon where the fellows learned about the degree granting sports program, the Nottingham shoulder prosthesis, and other academic programs. The fellows had additional ward rounds on the shoulder service and reviewed some additional interesting cases. Larry presented his work on anterior spine fusion while Regis discussed his research regarding the role of BMPs in growth plate chondrocyte maturation. Dinner that evening was at the spectacular Newstead Abbey located in the Sherwood Forest. The structure served as an abbey beginning in the 11th century and its history is richly interwoven with the political, social, and literary history of the U.K. The fellows received an outstanding tour and learned a great deal about the life of the Romantic poet, Lord Byron, whose family acquired the abbey and saved it from destruction in the 16th century. Professor Wallace dressed in a kilt and was a perfect host. Paul gave a toast on behalf of the fellows.
