The fellows visit the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital: The fellows
had an exciting academic session at the Queen Elizabeth II. A large number
of faculty were on hand for presentation by both the local faculty as well
as by the fellows. Each of the fellows presented a paper and outstanding
discussions occurred following each of the presentations.
After lunch at a local restaurant, the fellows had separate academic sessions. Regis, Cato, and Paul met with Dr. David Wood and heard
presentations from the research group at the Queen Elizabeth II hospital. Guy traveled to the Princess Margaret Hospital, where he attended pediatric
conference and commented on a number of challenging cases. Larry, Kurt, and Emil went to the Royal Perth Hospital where they discussed trauma
cases. Later in the afternoon, the fellows gathered with the registrars and some of the faculty and heard several of the registrar theses. This
was followed by a very interesting informal discussion about resident training in the U.S. and Australia and the role of research in the training
programs.
In the evening, the fellows attended an outstanding banquet at Mead's Restaurant. Kurt gave a toast and expressed the appreciation of the
fellows for the outstanding visit to Perth.
The fellows wish to send their best out to Nicole Leeks, one of the registrars at the Queen Elizabeth II hospital who was involved in a tragic
ocean plane crash during the fellows stay in Perth. Nicole and her husband were able to heroically complete a five hour swim to safety and our
thoughts and concerns are with Nicole and her husband, Tim Hurford.
